Julia’s hand-drawn designs are influenced by her local, rural landscape, which she photographs and paints. She’s particularly inspired by Rudyard Kipling’s illustrations, Jan Pienkowski’s silhouettes, and extravagantly patterned Tudor fabrics. Also, by the glorious William Morris designs and Chinese watercolours, which she encountered during her visits to her grandparents’ house.

It was on those visits that she would occasionally spot curlews by the lake, whose distinctive calls are described in many myths and poems.

Julia works with how colour, design and myths impact mood, stimulate ideas, and influence how we feel—the basis of Curlew Wallpaper and Design. Since studying at Chelsea College of Art and throughout her artwork, Julia has continued over the years to use natural themes, myths and folklore in wallpaper and product designs.
